IRCC invites 2,000 candidates in third Express Entry draw this week

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued invitations to apply (ITAs) for the most recent Express Entry lottery.

The department held a category-based selection draw for individuals with French language competency, inviting 2,000 applicants.

Candidates must have a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of at least 394 in order to be considered.

This is the third draw of the week, after a program-specific draw of 3,200 Canadian Experience Class candidates on August 14.

In the August 13 draw, 763 Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) applicants received ITAs. They need a minimum CRS score of 690.

This week’s draws follow an unusual amount of Express Entry draws in July. IRCC distributed more than 25,000 ITAs to applicants in nine consecutive lotteries.

This implies that July had the highest Express Entry drawings of any month since the system’s inception in 2015. It is a big rebound from a slow June that saw only one.

Four of the July draws were category-based, with two reserved for candidates who satisfied the French language competency criterion. The July 18 draw for this category has the lowest CRS score of the month (400).

The other two category-based draws provided ITAs to applicants in healthcare and commerce vocations.

Two of the remaining five draws were program-specific for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), while three were for applicants in the Provincial Nominee Program. On July 2, PNP candidates received the month’s highest CRS score (739).

The amount of program-specific drawings following a year of just category-based selection and general draws demonstrates that IRCC is meeting its aim of holding more domestic draws for permanent residence candidates currently residing in Canada. This is part of the department’s declaration that it will try to lower the number of temporary residents in Canada while still meeting its objective for permanent resident admissions.

What is Express Entry?

IRCC developed Express Entry, an application management system, in 2015 to assist in the selection of economic immigration applicants who are most likely to effectively integrate into Canada’s economy and workforce.

It employs the Comprehensive Ranking System to manage applications from three programs: the CEC, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

The method assesses and ranks candidates based on human capital variables such as age, occupation, education, language proficiency, and job experience. Each factor is given a score, and the total is the candidate’s overall CRS score. The best scorers are more likely to obtain an invitation to apply for permanent residency.
