The requirement for academic credential review stems from the fact that India’s education system is significantly distinct from that of the United States and Canada. To address this non-uniformity and standardize applications, institutions in the United States and Canada rely on companies such as World Evaluation Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), and Educational Perspective (EP).
This blog is a thorough reference to WES evaluation, one of the largest and most recognized credential evaluation services used by universities and companies in the United States and Canada to make academic credentials easier to grasp. It is the most established evaluation service and a founding member of NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services).
What exactly is WES?
It is a worldwide recognized non-profit organization that evaluates academic transcripts for credit for study abroad applicants. The WES evaluation is a fully computerized process in which scores are transformed to the 4.0 grading scale used in the United States and Canada.
When should you have WES assess your credentials?
WES must examine your credentials for two reasons: admission or employment in the United States and Canada. Because you must upload papers for the admission application, apply 10 – 15 days before the admission application. Similarly, apply for WES evaluation for Immigration purpose.
How do I apply for the WES assessment?
WES makes the application process easier for students and people who are applying for Permanent Residency (Immigration). Academic documents must be delivered through the most recent university/college you attended. WES will not regard academic documents to be official if you send them. There are three steps to applying for the WES evaluation:
Step 1: Apply to WES online and get a reference number.
Step 2: Collect all of the WES-required documents and submit them via your university/college in the format specified on the WES website.
Step 3: Once the evaluation is completed, the WES delivers the report to the institutions you designate.
Sending digital documents simplifies the process, which is available if your university has a digital connection with the WES.
What documents are needed for the WES credit evaluation?
If you want to study at universities in the United States or Canada, you must provide the following two documents for WES evaluation.
Degree certificate, final or provisional
Marks are stated.
Some diploma courses may have additional document requirements, such as a membership certificate. The WES website has a complete list of required documents based on your educational history.
The WES evaluation procedure
WES document-by-document and course-by-course evaluations require 7 business days to complete and share the report. The report for the Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) takes around 45-60 days.
The WES review procedure is divided into four stages:
1) Document imaging: Each document is scanned into the WES system by the evaluators. The documents may be sent from your university in many circumstances.
2) Evaluators examine the documents to confirm they are authentic and issued by approved institutions. The records are either accepted or refused at this point.
3) Evaluators who are country-specific experts determine the equivalency of documents pertaining to US or Canadian education. The validated documents are inspected once again. The application status “In progress” indicates that the application is being analyzed, whereas “On hold” indicates that the application requires additional verification.
4) The evaluators will prepare and distribute the final credential evaluation report. Notifications regarding the application being reviewed for the final stage will be updated on your accounts.
A WES report that has been assessed document by document includes the following:
The credential’s name.
The entrance requirements.
The duration of the program.
The educational equivalence in Canada.
WES recognizes Indian universities by Canada
WES-accredited universities can provide documents to WES online. WES recognizes many Indian universities. If you graduated from one of these universities, your WES application will be processed faster than if you graduated from an unrecognized university. Your university has the option of collaborating with WES.

What if my university is not on the list?
Finding out that WES does not recognize your university when pursuing higher education or migration might be rather discouraging. However, keep in mind that this is not the end of the road. You have a number of options for achieving your objectives. Let’s have a look at some of the possibilities.
Exploring Other Evaluation Agencies
WES is not the only body that assesses academic degrees. Other reputable organizations may acknowledge your university. It’s a good idea to do some research and contact other groups to see if they can help you. Among these organizations are:
Canada’s International Credential Assessment Service (ICAS)
CES stands for Comparative Education Service.
IQAS (International Qualifications Assessment Service)
Canadian Medical Council (for medical professions)
