Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for the third Express Entry draw of the week.
The department issued 3,750 ITAs in a category-based selection draw for healthcare jobs.
Candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 445 to be considered.
This was the second category-based drawing of the week. It follows the July 4 draw, which was a category-based selection draw for 1,800 trade occupation candidates.
IRCC also held a draw earlier this week, on July 2, for only candidates in the Provincial Nominee Program. The 920 invited candidates needed a minimum CRS score of 739.
This takes the total number of ITAs granted this week to 6,470, the highest figure since April.
The current trend of program-specific drawings started earlier this year. Since May 30, IRCC has staged four program-specific drawings, three of which are for PNP applicants.
Program-specific draws only consider Express Entry applicants who applied through one of the Express Entry programs, such as the CEC, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), or the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). In the case of a PNP-only draw, applicants are only considered if they were successfully nominated through an Express Entry aligned PNP stream, also known as improved nomination.
This form of draw had not happened since May 2023, when category-based selection drawings were introduced. However, starting January of this year, the IRCC has been striving to stabilize Canada’s high number of temporary residents. One way to do this is to provide additional choices for temporary residents, such as those in Canada on a work or study permit or a visitor visa, to become permanent residents.
Many temporary residents who have filed for permanent residence and are presently residing in Canada or have previously lived in Canada apply for PR through the CEC. The same is true for candidates in the PNP. This implies that IRCC may reach its annual objective for “Federal High Skilled Workers” (Express Entry) as established in the Immigration Levels Plan while also lowering the number of temporary residents in Canada.
What is Express Entry?
The Express Entry application management system was established in 2015 to allow IRCC to target applicants with in-demand human capital traits while also processing their applications faster. It monitors applications from the FSWP, FSTP, and CEC.
Express Entry’s CRS takes into account human capital variables such as age, job experience, occupation, language proficiency, and occupation while determining a candidate’s eligibility. Each factor is awarded a score, which, when put together, gives applicants their total CRS score. The greater a candidate’s CRS score, the more likely they are to be awarded an ITA in the next draw.
There are three types of Express Entry drawings: program-specific draws, category-based selection draws, and general draws. General drawings include all Express Entry candidates, regardless of program or occupation.
